Carrigtwohill United - 3
Midleton - 2
Carrig made the short journey to Knockgriffin on Sunday morning in the latest round of the cup and knew this was going to be a very difficult task as Midleton are top of the premier division and have also won two national titles in the previous two seasons.
As the game got underway Midleton started the better and moving the ball very well, Konrad was called on to make some good saves and he was also helped with some great defensive work by Sean Barry Hugh Cillian Callum and Daniel. After a succession of corners for Midleton which Carrig couldn’t clear the home side poked the ball into the net, this seemed to wake Carrig and for the remainder of the half we held our own ..
Cathal was bought on at halftime and made a big impact on the game with his work rate up front now causing the home side some trouble, Pol Mattie and Alex were now winning plenty of ball in midfield and from one driving run by Alex who found Cathal who in turn laid off a lovely ball for Sean Guiney to finish into the bottom corner, one all now and in the closing minutes Midleton were awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Konrad .
Into extra time we go and Midleton took the lead again after a good run by their midfielder whose shot went into the top corner giving Konrad no chance. Halftime in extra time and Carrig made 4 changes to get fresh legs on and we also changed formation to 442 , soon after the restart Carrig went on the attack Sean played a lovely pass to Cathal who just got to the ball before the keeper and slotted home from a tight angle, 2 all now
It was looking like it was going to penalties when Carrig went on one more attack down the right wing where Alex found Enda who then picked out Sean Guiney with a great pass. Sean in turn hit a powerful shot into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance to save it .. final whistle blew soon after and Carrig are now into the next round of the cup
