Crosshaven – 0
Crosshaven – 0
Our final league game was played on Wednesday after a busy May and start of June. We have played 50% of our games in the last month and the boys have made a tremendous effort in all the 9 games played in the last month.
The final game gave us an opportunity to reach our goal at the beginning of the season, to be promoted to division 2. It was a night where a draw or a win would allow us to be promoted but it was always going to be a cagey affair, with the lads knowing what was on offer if they got a result. There were more nerves between the coaches than the players as what they showed on the night was excellent. The lads pinned Crosshaven in their own half for large chunks of the first half but with little action around the opposition goal apart from half chances, until a good opportunity for Zayd outside the box midway through the first half.
After winning the free himself, he stepped up looking to keep the ball on target and that he did, scoring with a fantastic strike into the Crosshaven net. That goal sent us in 1-0 at half time. It was a great team effort from the lads in the first half. James and Eoin were solid at the back, with Charlie in behind, cleaning up any necessary balls. Dara Kav and Aaron were soli in their full back roles, Luke and Finn were winning the midfield battle helping out our front 4. Fionn and Kai offered good width and Sam was always dangerous up front with Zayd.
At half time, the lads knew if the score stayed the same, we would be promoted and they were determined to keep up the tempo of the first half. Determination and pride were on display clearly in the second half, Darragh Sull marked his appearance with a fantastic header when he came on and he was helped by Cormac and Thomas who played great roles in guiding us towards promotion.
The Crosshaven keeper made a great save from Zayd to make it 2-0 and Cormac was very unlucky with an effort just going passed the post. Charlie made a great save towards the end to calm the nerves and the lads got what they deserved to hold out for a result of 1-0. They are a special group of 14 lads and it was no easy task to get promoted after playing 9 games in a month when it would’ve been easy to get tired and lose momentum.
They have earned their rest over the summer and we look forward to next season in a higher division.
