Riverstown A - 1
After a superb away win last Thursday, the girls came into this home tie with Riverstown who themselves had an impressive 4-0 win in their opening match. The teams had already faced each other twice last season and in a friendly just 2 weeks previously and on each occasion the visitors had come out on top strongly.
However, that was not going to be the case today.
Absences to key players, meant that we had to re-jig our backline and midfield. Saoirse slotted in alongside Aisling as centre back and had an outstanding match especially in the second half. EmmaOC joined Kate in mid-field and she had her best 30 minutes to date as she covered box to box.
The match itself was tight and tense, with chances at both ends. Ailish was again commanding in goals and marshalled her area with authority, the best moment being when she raced to dive and smoother the ball at the feet of the onrushing attacker.
Upfront, the ever improving EmmaQ and Zoe were menacing but it was the ever dangerous Kaitlin that was tormenting the Riverstown back line.
The girls were unfortunate to go behind 1-0 mid-way through the second half, but all this did was spur them on to up their game even more and it was no surprise when Kaitlin broke the lines and beat the keeper 1v1 to record her first goal of the season, and undoubtedly not her last.
The final minutes of the match were nervy with both sides pressing for the winner but it was not to be.
A wonderful performance against a strong Riverstown side which needed all 13 players to give maximum effort which they did. Well done girls !
