Rockmount – 3
Carrigtwohill United – 4

A fantastic result and performance from the group against one of the top sides in the division, continuing what has been an excellent season to date. The squad delivered this performance without Jack B and Aaron Power available on the day, making the overall result all the more pleasing.

We started the game on the front foot and took a deserved lead after 12 minutes when Bryan Wiecek found the net, reacting quickest to a loose ball on the edge of the box and finishing superbly with a half volley into the top corner. The momentum stayed with us, and Bryan added his second on 22 minutes after sustained pressure, spotting a gap at the keeper’s near post and finishing neatly. Mikey then made it 3-0 on the half-hour mark, latching onto a well-weighted pass, rounding the keeper and showing great composure to finish from a very tight angle into the bottom corner, capping off a dominant opening spell and giving us a strong advantage going into half time.

Rockmount responded immediately after the break with a superb strike from distance just a minute into the second half, and followed it up with a second goal shortly after to bring the game right back into contention. From there, the match became very competitive and open, with both sides pushing.

This was capped off with a fourth goal from Jamie O’Riordan, who finished well from a corner to seal a deserved win.

The game remained on a knife edge right into injury time, and with just over two minutes added, Rockmount forced a set piece which caused real pressure in the box. The initial delivery was cleared but the ball was recycled and headed in from close range, making for a very nervy final minute and a half before the final whistle.

However, the group showed great composure and control overall in the closing stages, and their earlier work proved enough to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory.

There were strong performances all over the pitch. Sean was excellent in goal and provided real assurance throughout. Karol put in a top-class defensive display, marking one of the league’s standout players and keeping him quiet. Alongside him, Jamie, Isaac and Owen were outstanding at the back, dealing well with everything that came their way.

In midfield, Sam and Bailey were exceptional, dominating the centre of the pitch despite being up against three opponents, showing great work rate, composure and control throughout.

Bryan and Jack Lombard were a constant threat going forward, creating chances and linking play well, while also working tirelessly off the ball. Ryan and Mikey caused continuous problems for the Rockmount defence with their movement, energy and pressing, keeping the opposition under pressure throughout.

A special mention also to Nathan, who came on with 30 minutes to go and made a big impact, helping the team regain control and see out the game strongly.

This result caps off what has been an excellent season to date for the group. Competing in the Premier Division—the top level of football in Cork and one of the most competitive leagues in Munster—the players have more than held their own and continue to show their quality week on week.

Even with two league games left to play, the team’s current league standing has already secured their position above the relegation zone. While relegation doesn’t strictly apply to the U16 Premier division as the group prepares to transition into Youths football next season, finishing clear of the bottom remains a significant achievement for their first year at this level.

Combined with reaching a national quarter-final and remaining in contention for the local cup, this season highlights the consistency and competitive edge the squad has developed throughout the year.

The effort, commitment and attitude from the players has been outstanding. They have embraced the challenge of playing at this level, continued to improve, and represented the club with real pride.

It’s also worth recognising the pathway that continues to develop within the club. At this age group, the first team provides a highly competitive environment, while the second team plays an important role in supporting development and game time across the wider squad. This structure allows players to progress and continue improving within the club, with 5 of our current team transitioning from our 2nd team.

In addition, several players have continued their football journey with Carrigtwohill FC over the last number of years, including Sean, Bailey, Sam, Bryan, Josh and Rafa, which is a credit to their development and the standards they have reached.

Overall, this season has been a real success, with plenty still to play for, and there is no doubt that there is even more to come from this group
