A winning start to the season for the girls! 💙💛
Carrig got the new season off to a fantastic start with a hard-fought 3–1 victory over Riverstown. The scoreline perhaps flattered Carrig slightly, as this was a much closer game than the final result suggests, with both teams battling hard throughout.
Carrig took an early lead when Emi produced a cracking strike from the edge of the box, sending the ball flying into the roof of the net. Carrig continued to push and created chances to extend their advantage, but the Riverstown goalkeeper was having an excellent game and kept her team in it.
As the first half wore on, Riverstown began to look dangerous on the break and eventually found an equaliser. Their midfielder embarked on a mazy run into the Carrig box before calmly finishing past the onrushing Hannah to make it 1–1.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Carrig pushing forward while Riverstown looked to break at every opportunity. Rolina was excellent at reading the danger, while Hannah played the sweeper-keeper role to perfection, coming off her line bravely on several occasions to snuff out the threat.
Around halfway through the second half, some fantastic work from Lucy and Phoebe in closing down the Riverstown defence resulted in Carrig winning the ball back and earning a penalty. Up stepped Lauren, who kept her composure and saw her spot-kick find the net despite a superb effort from the Riverstown goalkeeper.
With the game still finely balanced heading into the closing stages, Carrig continued to work hard. Then Isabelle picked the ball up inside her own half and took flight down the wing, driving forward before cutting into the box and finishing brilliantly at the near post to put Carrig 3–1 ahead.
