Carrigtwohill United produced an excellent performance against higher-division opposition in the CYL Cup, only to suffer a narrow defeat on penalties after a very competitive game at Ballyadam Park.

Carrigtwohill started the game brightly and deservedly took control, going into half-time with a 2-0 lead. Callum O'Byrne was instrumental in both goals, setting up Hugh Crowley and Robbie Cotter as Carrigtwohill took full advantage of their opportunities. The team showed great confidence and composure against a Springfield side competing in a higher division.

Springfield responded strongly after the break, with two lapses in concentration allowing them to get back into the game. Despite this, Carrigtwohill continued to look dangerous and created enough to feel that they could still edge the contest before the final whistle. The game remained highly competitive right until the end, with neither side able to find the decisive goal.

The match ultimately went to penalties, where Carrigtwohill were narrowly beaten 4-3. While the result was obviously disappointing, the players can take enormous credit from their performance. For large spells, Carrigtwohill looked like the better team and showed that they were more than capable of competing with a side from a higher division.

There were a number of outstanding individual performances, with Callum O'Byrne, Josh Kirby, Enda O'Donnell and Jack Gilley all singled out for their efforts. The overall team performance was also a major positive, with the players showing plenty of determination, confidence and belief throughout the game.

Although the lads will be disappointed not to have come away with the victory, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. They can now turn their attention back to the league and look to carry this level of performance into their next game.
