This Sunday morning, the U13s took a break from the league to concentrate on Bowl Cup action away to division-above Midleton Magpies. A 6–0 defeat far from tells the entire story.

Multiple girls trying out in different positions today led to an unsettled first half, while the girls bedded in and tried out new formations. With more than half the team playing in two positions today, valuable information was found that will be most useful as the league season continues. Midleton themselves had a fine game going forward, which gave them a five-goal lead at half-time, despite keeper Skyler, who was very busy for the entire game, making a number of great first-half saves.

Fortunately, this game was exactly the old adage: a game of two halves! As the team were told at half-time, while some would see this game as a waste, we knew better. We had a second half to put into practice what we had spent the first half setting up, and they did exactly that. In a game where some girls played both attacking and defensive roles, a rhythm settled in for the second half. Beating Midleton to the ball through pure will and pushing the opposition back made for a much more confident half. Midleton got one more goal in the second half, but Carrig had the lion’s share of attacking possession, coming very close a number of times.

A very solid second-half performance that we can be proud of, which will pay dividends as the season progresses.
