U-18 Munster Youth Cup 2nd round
Leeds 1 - 4 Carrigtwohill Utd
Carrigtwohill Utd. Advanced to the 3rd round of the Munster youth cup with a convincing win away at Leeds.
The strength of the squad was put to the test for this bank Holiday fixture, with some regular players on leave, the positions were adequately filled by others who availed of the opportunity to play. Carrig played with the back four of Dominic Jurie, Dennis Sitarek, Colm Harte and Leslie Edwards. Along with Cillian Murphy in goal, this defensive unit coped well with any early Leeds attack’s.
In the first half Carrig’s overall play was good in possession of the ball, working it out from the back up through the field. Yet solid defending by Leeds, limited the number of clear cut chances. It took a set piece free kick in the 37th minute, that gave Carrig the lead. Alex Lombard stepped up to convert, bending the kick past the out-stretched Leeds keeper. This was quickly followed by a shot from Evan O Connor, which in turn was saved on the line. Carrig who were in full control of the game were themselves caught out by a Leeds break in the 42nd minute. An exchange of passes on the left side released the Leeds centre forward to slot home from inside the box. Carrig didn’t panic and within four minutes had restored their lead again. This time Dominic Jurie had been fouled outside the Leeds box and after the resulting free had been charged down, Shane Daly followed up on the breaking ball and shot it to the net from 12 yards.
2 -1 at halftime to Carrig, yet the game was not closed out by any means. The midfield of Alex Lombard, Evan, Amany and Shane Daly had to work hard to maintain their grip on the game, while up front Seba and Noah continued in their quest for goals. Roan O’ Keefe was introduced for Shane Daly and was quickly involved in the action – shooting wide while under pressure from the Leeds defence. The breakthrough for the third “and best goal” finally arrived in the 65th minute, a ball out from the back from Colm found Noah, who floated it over to Evan. In turn Evan neatly beat his marker and set up Alex Lombard for a subtle flick in – sheer joy for all to watch.
Evan almost made it 4 in the 75th minute, after a mazy run from midfield – only to see his shot come off the base of the upright. The fourth goal finally arrived when the tireless Seba slipped in a through pass for Noah to go one on one with the keeper, beating him from close range. The game was well and truly over now with Carrig progressing to the 3rd round.
Man of the match award was evenly split between our industrious left back on the day –Leslie Edwards and the attacking midfielder Evan O’ Connor, well done to both players for outstanding displays.
